Can discontinuing long-term antibiotic use cause diarrhea?

I’ve often heard that taking antibiotics longterm can CAUSE diarrhea (due to the killing of both the bad and good bacteria). But can stopping antibiotics cold-turkey cause diarrhea as well?

My cat had been on doxycycline for about 20 months and we just stopped it last week. He was not taking probiotics. 3-4 days after discontinuing it, he developed some nasty diarrhea.

At the same time though, we added a new medication (Cyclosporine) which may have a side effect of diarrhea, however it is not a common side effect.

I’m really not sure what exactly caused the diarrhea. Could it have been discontinuing doxycycline? Thanks for the help!
Forgot to mention that he never had diarrhea while on the doxycycline.

Could be. Antibiotics killed off the normal flora in the gut. Now bacteria are starting to repopulate his gut and could be that it’s not in a way that agrees with him. Probiotics might help, might not. I’ve never looked into whether there is any objective data supporting the use of probiotics. I mean in theory they sound good, I just don’t know if they can get down into the gut alive and whether or not they will actually do anything when they are having to compete with the bacteria already there.

Could also be cyclosporine. Does that to humans sometimes, so I would assume it can do it to cats too.

As long as he doesn’t get dehydrated (don’t know how bad the diarrhea is), I’d say to give him a few days to see if it resolves on its own. If he is losing a lot of water and getting dehydrated, you need to call your vet.
